BOYZONE singer Stephen Gately has died suddenly at the age of 33 while on holiday in Majorca.

The tragic news was confirmed on Saturday (October 10, 2009) by Spanish police, who announced there were no signs of suspicious circumstances. The cause of death is not yet known.

Gately had been on holiday with his long-term partner Andy Cowles.

Police said they were called to a house near Port d’Andratx, on the western tip of the island, on Saturday afternoon to investigate the sudden death of the 33-year-old.

“At the moment it is not known how he died,” a police spokesman said, before ruling out anything suspicious.

The shock news has left his fellow band-mates “completelely devastated” but they are now travelling to Majorca.

A statement issued by the remaining members of Boyzone described the singer as “our friend and brother”, adding: “We have shared such wonderful times together over the years and were all looking forward to sharing many more.

“Stephen was a beautiful person in both body and spirit. He lit up our lives and those of the many friends he had all over the world. Our love and sympathy go out to Andrew and Stephen’s family. We love you and will miss you forever.”

Singer Ronan Keating is also on his way back from the US and intends to join the rest of the group in Majorca.

Boyzone enjoyed six UK No.1 hits in the 1990s and reformed in 2007. According to music journalist Paul Gambaccini, Boyzone sold more singles than Take That in the ’90s.
