The Cure headline Teenage Cancer Trust gigs (2006)

The Cure, Robert Smith

Story by Jack Foley

THE Cure are to play their only confirmed UK show of 2006 as part of the line-up of this year’s Teenage Cancer Trust concerts at London’s Royal Albert Hall.

Robert Smith and co will be playing an extra show on the final Saturday of the traditional week-long series of concerts (April 1, 2006), organised by Roger Daltrey CBE and Harvey Goldsmith CBE, in aid of the Teenage Cancer Trust.

Every year, the Royal Albert Hall plays host to five nights of top quality entertainment that boasts a selection of the finest music and comedy acts around. Past highlights have included shows by The Who, Eric Clapton and Oasis.

This year’s line-up is similarly impressive and, for the third year in a row, includes a comedy night featuring the return of Ricky Gervais, who last performed in 2004.

Ricky will be appearing alongside a selection of friends to kick off the week on Monday, March 27. Tickets go on sale from 10am on Tuesday, February 14.

There is also a must for fans of metal and heavy rock – a Tommy Vance tribute night on Friday, March 31, featuring Judas Priest, Ian Gillan, Scorpions and Boned. It’s a year since Judas Priest last played in the UK and again this is their only 2006 UK date announced so far.

The line-up further includes two of the UK’s hottest new bands, Razorlight and Bloc Party, who will each be headlining a night.

For Razorlight fans it could be a first chance to hear some new material while for Bloc Party aficionados, this will be a welcome return to London after a blistering show at Brixton Academy in October.

Completing this year’s headline acts are Goldfrapp, who will play on Tuesday, March 28.

The full line-up is as follows:

Monday, March 27 – An evening of stand-up comedy with special guest Ricky Gervais

Tuesday, March 28 – Goldfrapp plus very special guest to be announced

Wednesday, March 29 – Bloc Party and special guests including Biffy Clyro and Mystery Jets

Thursday, March 30 – Razorlight plus very special guest to be announced

Friday, March 31 – Tommy Vance Tribute Night with Judas Priest, The Scorpions, Ian Gillan and Friends and Boned

Saturday, April 1 – The Cure

Every day in the UK, six teenagers are diagnosed with cancer – and the numbers are rising. As a result of the funds raised from these shows and other events Roger Daltrey is involved in for TCT, the charity has been able to help a great deal more of these teenagers.

Since the first show in November 2000, TCT has opened specialist cancer Units in Sheffield, Liverpool and a new Unit in London. In 2006 the charity will open a new Unit in Glasgow and will begin work on new sites in Cardiff and Cambridge.
