The World's End OST

Review by Jack Foley

IndieLondon Rating: 4 out of 5

AS WELL as giving filmgoers a really cool Cornetto film trilogy, Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright know how to assemble a good soundtrack.

Following hot on the heels of Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz comes The World’s End, which is a blast.

A veritable treasure trove of classic cuts from the late ’90s/early Noughties this gleefully refers back to a time when music was genuinely cool for a lot of its inspiration.

There’s Primal Scream’s Loaded for starters (the lyrics of which help to form a key part of the film’s script), Blur’s seminal break-through moment There’s No Other Way (which arguably drops one of the greatest intro’s of all time), Soup Dragons’ infinitely chant-worthy I’m Free, The Happy Mondays’ infinitely danceable Step On and The Stone Roses’ majestic Fool’s Gold.

Interspersed with various comic nuggets of dialogue from the film, it’s both a great nostalgia trip (or introduction) for that particular music scene, as well as a fun reminder of some of the film’s funnier moments.

The tracks have been well selected too, as to fit in with the tone of the movie and the moments in time that they are deployed: witness the use of Inspiral Carpets’ classic This Is How It Feels, The Sundays’ Here’s Where The Story Ends or St Etienne’s Join Our Club.

And for extra diversity, there’s even some shifts in tone, whether suddenly dropping in Kylie Minogue’s Step Back In Time, The Doors’ Alabama Song or Soul II Soul’s Get A Life, as if to underline the broad musical awareness that these filmmakers’ have.

As I’ve often stated, the mark of a really good soundtrack compilation always is whether it holds up to enjoyment regardless of whether you’ve seen the film or not. The World’s End certainly does that. It’s a great compilation in its own right and a terrific accompaniment to the on-screen shenanigans of its main protagonists.
