TOM Petty And The Heartbreakers are to play their first major UK gig in 20 years at the 2012 Isle of Wight Festival.

Best known for iconic hits such as Free Fallin’, I Won’t Back Down and American Girl, Petty will headline on the opening Friday night.

Hailing Petty and his band The Heartbreakers as “one of the greatest rock and roll bands of all time”, festival promoter John Giddings said: “It has taken years to achieve but I’m sure it will be worth the wait.”

They will join a line-up that already includes Bruce Springsteen, Elbow and Biffy Clyro – the former of which will headline the Sunday.

As yet, the Saturday headline act hasn’t been announced.

Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers have won two Grammys for their single, Room at The Top, and their album, Echo.

They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002.

The dates for next year’s Isle of Wight event have been moved to avoid a clash with the Diamond Jubilee and half-term holidays. It will now take place from June 22-24, 2012.
