US stars re-record We Are The World for Haiti

Barbra Streisand

Story by Jack Foley

BARBRA Streisand and Kanye West are among the stars who have together to re-record the 1985 charity hit We Are the World for the Haiti Earthquake Appeal.

They joined more than 75 singers at Henson Recording Studios in Hollywood (where the original was recorded) on Monday (February 1, 2010).

Other performers included Celine Dion, Pink, ‘Lil Wayne, Carlos Santana, Jennifer Hudson, Natalie Cole, Justin Bieber, Brian Wilson, Miley Cyrus, Usher, Enrique Iglesias, Josh Groban, Harry Connick Jr, Akon, Snoop Dogg and Tony Bennett.

The song will air for the first time on US TV channel NBC on February 12 and will be shown during the coverage of the opening ceremony of the Vancouver Winter Olympics.

The accompanying video has been directed by Oscar-winning director Paul Haggis (of Crash fame).

The recording follows the announcement last week by Quincy Jones, producer of the original, that artists would come together to help the people of Haiti in the wake of the earthquake last month.

Funds raised from the original single – which topped $30 million – went to USA for Africa to fund hunger relief in Africa.
