Will Martin - A New World

Will Martin, A New World

Review by Jack Foley

IndieLondon Rating: 2 out of 5

WILL Martin, at 23, is already being hailed as a classical great in waiting. An insight into his talent is afforded by the release of A New World, his first LP for Universal Classics and Jazz.

Comprised of classical crossover songs and recorded with a full orchestra, it mixes the familiar with the less well-known and certainly does enough to suggest that Martin has a very bright future ahead of him (hell, he’s already sung before the All Blacks!).

But, if anything, it’s a little too earnest in delivery. Every song is delivered with weight and meaning and there’s simply not enough vibrancy to really make this a collection worth owning.

On the plus side, there’s a majestically delivered version of Albinoni’s Adagio (aka Anytime Anywhere) that benefits from the presence of All Angels on backing vocals (the contrasting styles compliment each other very well), while David Garrett’s presence is notable on Se – Cinema Paradiso (based on the work of Ennio Morricone).

There’s also intriguing insights afforded into his home country thanks to the presence of Hine E Hine, a Maori folk song, while Going Home from Dvorak’s New World Symphony is also helped by some Maori chants along the way.

But even though the album draws from a wide cross-section of classical elements and global recordings – including the theme song from Lord of The Rings originally recorded by Annie Lennox as one of the more commercial offerings – it’s strangely subdued and – as we said before – too self-serious.

Unlike some other classical crossover LPs that are designed to showcase new vocal talents, this probably doesn’t do Martin that much justice.
