Willie Nelson announces London tour date (2008)

Willie Nelson

Story by Jack Foley

LEGENDARY singer and actor Willie Nelson has announced two concerts in May 2008, including a night at London’s Hammersmith Apollo.

With 5 Grammy Awards, 2 quadruple platinum albums, 1 triple platinum album, 3 double platinum albums, 5 platinum albums and 7 Gold Albums to his name, tickets for Nelson’s shows are set to be in hot demand.

The two dates are…

Sunday, May 11 at Manchester Apollo
Tuesday, May 13 at Hammersmith Apollo

Tickets go on sale on Friday, January 11 at 9am and tickets cost £30 & £37.50 for Manchester and £35 and £45 for London.

Born in 1933 in the tiny Central Texas farming community of Abbott, Willie Nelson grew up in a world permeated with music: The gospel songs of the grandparents who raised him; the blues and Mexican corridas that eased the labor of the cotton fields; the country and Western Swing hits filling the airwaves from Nashville and Fort Worth… and the inner music that percolated up ceaselessly inside of him.

Melodies are easy, he says of songwriting; if he needs one, he just plucks one out of the air. The air, he says, is full of music.

Nelson is one of those rare artists who have come to be defined by their sheer indefinableness. He has made a career out of defying expectation – rebellious Outlaw fighting Nashville’s staid production-line sensibilities; Award-winning country legend; crooning pop mega-star; working man.

An incessant road master playing to sold-out crowds worldwide on his own terms. Country boy. Golf enthusiast. Movie star. He’s covered reggae, rock and gospel tunes. He’s played with punkettes L7 and symphony orchestras. The two live dates should be very special.
