Wireless Festival 2009: Basement Jaxx first headliner

Basement Jaxx

Story by Jack Foley

BASEMENT Jaxx have been confirmed as the first headline act for the 2009 Wireless Festival in London’s Hyde Park on Saturday, July 4.

The Jaxx will be joined by the likes of Dizzee Rascal and The Streets for the Saturday line-up, thereby helping to ensure that the fifth year of the event will be as star-studded as ever.

Basement Jaxx headlined the very first Wireless in the summer that their million selling Singles album hit No. 1. Combining a string of smash hits like Red Alert, Where’s You Head At, Good Luck and Oh My Gosh with stunning visuals and a glittering array of guest singers, the Jaxx live show is the stuff of dance legend.

Commenting on the announcement, the Jaxx said: “Frank Sinatra once said “It’s very nice to go traveling but it’s so much nicer to come home” and he was right. It’s going to be a mad summer for us, playing in all four corners of the world, but we are really looking forward to coming back to the very heart of London and playing at Wireless.”

Headlining the second stage on Saturday at Wireless will be Mike Skinner and The Streets. From breakthrough track, Has It Come To This, Mike Skinner has pioneered modern British dance music and influenced countless other acts whilst giving British youth a new vocabulary.

The man himself is ready and waiting for July to come round, stating: “I am excited about returning to the site of my favourite ever gig – when Daft Punk played at Wireless 2007.

“This year we will be performing just before Basement Jaxx who I remember introduced me to my French idols on that hot Hyde Park evening two years ago. Hyde Park will hopefully be as hot this year and someone else will enjoy their favourite ever gig.”

Dizzee Rascal, meanwhile, brings his sounds to the Main Stage for the first time. The three times gold album selling artist has been the pioneer of London and Britain’s hip hop and grime scene since debut album, Boy In Da Corner.

He commented: “I’m really excited about it, to be doing something so big in my hometown – its going to be a good one.”

Following multiple sell outs for Wireless 2008, promoter Steve Homer is looking forward to another year in the heart of London.

“Basement Jaxx was where Wireless’ reputation for outstanding dance line-ups on the Saturday began and they are very much a significant part of the history of the event.

“It’s a pleasure to welcome them back for what I am sure will be another outstanding performance and to have the likes of Dizzee Rascal and The Streets also on the bill demonstrates the strength of Wireless after five incredible years.”
