But Kingston is delighted to be joining the drama, saying: “I simply couldn’t resist the opportunity to get inside the iconic 165 Eaton Place.”

She continued by describing her character as “wonderfully intriguing” and someone who will “over time reveal some secrets of her own”.

The second series of the drama is due to begin shooting in October and will begin in 1938 and span the months leading up to the outbreak of World War II.

Revealing a little more of what to expect, writer Heidi Thomas said: “Outside 165 Eaton Place, London and Europe are poised on the knife-edge of calamity. Inside, there’s a whole world of dark and dangerous emotions to explore.”

Also joining the second season is actor Kenneth Cranham.
