Batman spin-off series to revolve around Jim Gordon
Story by Jack Foley
A Batman spin-off series based around police commissioner James Gordon has been ordered by the Fox Television network.
Gotham will take the form of an origins story that will follow Gordon in his days as a detective. It will feature some of the series’ best known villains, although Batman himself will not appear.
Written by Britain’s Bruno Heller (The Mentalist, Rome), the show has been given a full series order and won’t have to go via the pilot first route.
The announcement of the new series comes days before the US premiere of Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D., a rival ABC TV show based on The Avengers franchise owned by rival comic book giant Marvel.
It is also one of three comic book properties now in development at Fox, alongside adaptations of Unthinkable and Alan Moore’s League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.
Gordon is one of the most popular characters of the Batman universe and first appeared in Detective Comics #27, the same issue that introduced the Dark Knight.
The character was played by Gary Oldman in Christopher Nolan’s recent film trilogy.
