BATTLESTAR Galactica prequel Caprica has been axed by the Syfy channel after poor ratings.

The show, which aired on Sky1 in the UK, had been on an extended mid-season hiatus while the writers attempted to figure out whether it had a future.

But just as it was about to make its UK comeback to complete its first season, a statement issued by Syfy bosses in the US has confirmed that the show will not be picked up for a second season.

The statement reads: “The remaining first run episodes of Caprica – airing Tuesdays at 10/9c [in the US] – will be removed from the schedule as of next Tuesday, November 2.

“The final five episodes of the season will be re-scheduled to air at a to be announced time in the first quarter of 2011, and will conclude the run of the series.”

Mark Stern, EVP of original programming at Syfy, added: “We appreciate all the support that fans have shown for Caprica and are very proud of the producers, cast, writers and the rest of the amazing team that has been committed to this fine series.

“Unfortunately, despite its obvious quality, Caprica has not been able to build the audience necessary to justify a second season.”
