A PREQUEL to Beauty & The Beast is in the works at Disney+.

The limited series will take the form of an origins story featuring the characters Gaston and LeFou, played by Luke Evans and Josh Gad in the 2017 live-action remake (also starring Emma Watson and Dan Stevens).

Once Upon a Time creators Eddy Kitsis and Adam Horowitz have been tapped by Disney to pen the script.

The untitled series will also be a musical event spanning six episodes, with composer Alan Menken in talks to return as well.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the project, which is still in the early stages of development, will take place well before the events of the film and will also expand the Beauty and the Beast universe.

No other stars from the film, which featured the voices of Ewan McGregor and Sir Ian McKellen (among others), have yet been confirmed to appear, although it is speculated that some could cameo.

Released in 2017, the live-action Beauty and the Beast feature grossed more than $1 billion at the worldwide box office and became one of the biggest live-action remake success stories.

Its revival for Disney+ follows several Marvel and Star Wars titles that have also seen their universes expanded on streaming format, as well as Pixar’s Monsters, Inc., Disney’s High School Musical, Turner & Hooch and The Mighty Ducks.
