BEN Wheatley is to direct Peter Capaldi’s first episodes as Doctor Who.

The filmmaker, best known for grisly thrillers Kill List and Sightseers, told Screen Daily that he was “excited and honoured” to have been asked.

The self-confessed childhood fan said that although Tom Baker was “his” Doctor, he has been busy rediscovering the show while watching new episodes with his son.

He described the work being done lately as “amazing” and said he was “really looking forward to working with Peter Capaldi and finding out where Steven Moffat is planning to take the new Doctor”.

Wheatley’s episodes are expected to air as part of the eighth season, which is due next autumn (2014).

Prior to that, Doctor Who celebrates its 50th anniversary next month with a 75-minute special episode called The Day Of The Doctor on Saturday, November 23.

There will then be the Christmas special, which will see Scottish star Capaldi replacing Matt Smith as the Time Lord.

Capaldi’s highest-profile role before now has been as the vicious spin doctor Malcolm Tucker in political satire The Thick Of It although he was also seen this summer starring alongside Brad Pitt in World War Z.
