HBO has renewed Boardwalk Empire for a fourth season.
The decision was taken following the continued success of the show in the US, where after just a couple of episodes into its third season run it looks comfortably set to match last season’s 8 million average.
Announcing the renewal, HBO programming president Michael Lombardo said: “Terry Winter, Martin Scorsese and the rest of their outstanding team continue to produce a stunning show that never fails to surprise and entertain.
“We are excited to bring this unique series back for a fourth season.”
Production on the fourth season will start in New York on a yet-to-be-announced date and it will air in the US in 2013.
UK viewers can currently see the third season of the Prohibition era drama on Sky Atlantic on Saturday nights from 9pm.
