BRENDA Blethyn’s detective series Vera has been renewed for a second series.

ITV has commissioned four more two-hour episodes of the crime thriller, which sees Blethyn playing DCI Vera Stanhope.

David Leon will also be back as Stanhope’s parter and surrogate son DS Joe Ashworth, while Wunmi Mosaku, Jon Morrison and Paul Ritter are also returning as Vera’s squad of detectives.

In addition, the new episodes will welcome Torchwood‘s Cush Jumbo as DC Bethany Whelan for two episodes.

Vera is based on the book series by Ann Cleeves and ITV confirmed that one of the four new instalments will be an adaptation of the 2011 novel Silent Voices.

Blethyn will next be seen in Sky Arts drama King of the Teds alongside Sir Tom Jones and Gavin & Stacey‘s Alison Steadman.
