COLIN Farrell and Vince Vaughn will star in the second season of acclaimed HBO drama True Detective.

After months of speculation, and Farrell’s own revelation via Twitter earlier this week, HBO confirmed the news on Tuesday. It also revealed that Justin Lin (Fast & Furious) will direct the first two of the eight-episode sophomore run.

Thus far, only limited plot details have been revealed. But Farrell will play Ray Velcoro, a compromised detective whose allegiances are torn between his masters in a corrupt police department and the mobster who owns him.

Vaughn, meanwhile, will play Frank Semyon, a career criminal in danger of losing his empire when his move into legitimate enterprise is upended by the murder of a business partner.

Season two will once again be written by Nic Pizzolatto and will be directed by several helmers. However, Emmy winner Cary Fukunaga – who directed the debut season – will not return.

HBO programming president Michael Lombardo has previously stated that the season two scripts he’s seen so far are even “more exciting” than those for season one, which was beaten to Emmy success by the final season of Breaking Bad.
