Daniel Mays to lead Jimmy McGovern's Common

Daniel Mays in Shifty

Story by Jack Foley

DANIEL Mays is to head the cast of new crime drama Common from acclaimed writer Jimmy McGovern.

The one-off thriller focuses on ‘joint enterprise’ law and follows the story of four men who flee a fatal stabbing.

Mays, who is widely known for roles in Shifty, ITV’s BAFTA-winning drama Mrs Biggs, Welcome To The Punch and the upcoming Byzantium, will be joined by Jodhi May (The Ice Cream Girls), Robert Pugh (Game of Thrones), Nico Mirallegro (My Mad Fat Diary) and Susan Lynch (Monroe).

McGovern commented: “When it comes to casting you always have a ‘wish list’ – a list of actors who’d be perfect for the parts you have written. You never get them of course. They’re often too busy or away on holiday or they hate the script or whatever. But on this occasion, I got them all, every single one on my wish list. And I am over the moon.”

Common will be directed by David Blair, who previously worked with McGovern on Accused. The one-off drama will air on BBC1.
