SCOTTISH stage actor and singer Darius Campbell is to play the male lead in a new drama pilot of Beauty And The Beast.

If picked up, the ABC show would a fantasy re-imagining of the classic tale that follows an embattled princess named Grace as she embarks on an unlikely relationship with a mysterious beast, named Shiro.

Campbell will portray Shiro as a mercenary bodyguard, according to US website Deadline, joining the previously cast Chris Egan as Grace’s fiance Gorrick.

As yet, no actress has been cast as Grace.

Campbell rose to fame in the UK as a finalist on Pop Idol before enjoying a successful West End carrer in musicals, including Chicago (alongside America Ferrara) and Guys And Dolls. He also played Rhett Butler in Trevor Nunn’s short-lived musical production of Gone With The Wind.
