David Jason returning to Open All Hours for one-off Christmas special

Open All Hours

Story by Jack Foley

SIR David Jason is to reprise his role as Granville in BBC sitcom Open All Hours for a one-off Christmas special.

He will be joined by, respectively, Lynda Baron and Maggie Ollerenshaw as nurse Gladys Emmanuel and Mavis respectively.

The 30-minute special will be penned by the programme’s original writer, Roy Clarke, who leapt at the opportunity to get the cast back together again.

He commented: “This has been fun – a great opportunity to work with David Jason again and to suggest how things at that corner shop might look today.”

The original series ran from 1973 to 1985 and was headed by the late Ronnie Barker as Granville’s uncle Arkwright, who ran the shop in which the series was based.

According to the BBC, the new episode will see Granville running the shop, having inherited it from Arkwright.

Sir David himself commented: “I am sure there is an audience out there who would like to see what Granville has been up to in the corner shop. I’m really excited to be bringing back Open All Hours. It will be a great family show for Christmas and a fitting tribute to the legacy of Arkwright.”

BBC One controller Charlotte Moore said it made BBC One’s Christmas schedule “suddenly feel complete”.
