David Threlfall to play Tommy Cooper in new ITV drama
Story by Jack Foley
SHAMELESS star David Threlfall is to play legendary comedian Tommy Cooper in a new ITV drama.
The one-off film has been written by Men Behaving Badly creator Simon Nye and will focus on the dilemma faced by Cooper when he fell in love with his assistant, Mary Kay, and started a relationship which lasted 17 years.
It will explore how Cooper became torn between two equally devoted women.
Amanda Redman will play his wife, Gwen (who he nicknamed Dove), although the role of Mary has yet to be cast.
ITV’s director of drama commissioning, Steve November, said it felt “fitting” to tell Cooper’s story on ITV.
The comic magician, one of the best-known TV stars of the ’70s, died after suffering a heart attack on stage, live on television, in 1984.
Threlfall is best known for the role of layabout Frank Gallagher in the Channel 4 series Shameless, which recently ended its 10th season and which has also spawned a US spin-off starring William H Macy in the Threlfall role.
