Deadwood movie begins filming as Ian McShane and Timothy Olyphant among returnees

Deadwood: Season 1

Story by Jack Foley

HBO’S long awaited Deadwood movie has finally started filming with most of the show’s original cast returning.

Leading men Ian McShane and Timothy Olyphant will both reprise their roles, as will Molly Parker, Paula Malcomson, John Hawkes, Anna Gunn, W. Earl Brown, Dayton Callie, Brad Dourif, Robin Weigert, William Sanderson, Kim Dickens and Gerald McRaney.

Jade Pettyjohn (of School of Rock fame) is among those joining the cast as a new character named Caroline.

The Deadwood movie has been written by original show creator David Milch and will be directed by Daniel Minahan, who helmed four episodes of the series.

HBO chief Casey Bloys said he was hoping for a premiere date in spring 2019.

To be set 10 years after the events of season three — roughly paralleling the gap between the end of the show and the resumption of production — the film will find the characters reuniting to celebrate South Dakota’s statehood.

According to the logline, former rivalries are reunited, alliances are tested and old wounds reopened, with everyone navigating the inevitable changes time and modernity have wrought.
