Story by Jack Foley

DEREK Jacobi is to play the lead role in a new BBC 1 romantic comedy called Antony And Cleopatra.

The veteran star will appear alongside Anne Reid in the six-part series, which follows childhood sweethearts Alan (Jacobi) and Celia (Reid) as they are reunited after 60 years and begin to rekindle their romance.

The drama has been written by Scott & Bailey‘s Sally Wainwright and will be directed by Sherlock‘s Euros Lyn.

Sarah Lancashire (Five Daughters), Nicola Walker (Spooks), Tony Gardner (Fresh Meat), Dean Andrews (Life On Mars) and comedienne Ronni Ancona will provide support.

BBC producer Nicola Shindler commented: “I am delighted to be working with Sally again on such glorious scripts and with such a great cast. Antony And Cleopatra is funny and sharp and we have assembled a cast that will bring it to life with an energy and real joy. This is going to look and feel like a timeless love story in a very modern setting.”

The series is currently scheduled to air on BBC One later this year.
