DIEGO Luna is to reprise his Rogue One: A Star Wars Story character for a new prequel series on Disney’s new streaming service, Disney Plus.

The series, announced today (November 8, 2018), is due to go into production in 2019 and will follow the rebel spy Cassian Andor during the early days of the Rebellion, ahead of the events of Rogue One.

Commenting on his involvement in a statement, Luna said: “Going back to the Star Wars universe is very special for me. I have so many memories of the great work we did together and the relationships I made throughout the journey.

“We have a fantastic adventure ahead of us, and this new exciting format will give us the chance to explore this character more deeply.”

The live-action, scripted series has yet to be given an official name. But it marks the second Star Wars series to be announced by Disney for its direct-to-consumer platform.

First up is The Mandalorian, which boasts Jon Favreau as its showrunner.

The reveal of the Rogue One prequel arrives months after Disney CEO Bob Iger revealed in February that multiple Star Wars live-action series were in the works for the DTC platform.

Disney Plus, which also had its name revealed today, is designed as Disney’s rival to Netflix. It is currently due to launch sometime in 2019 and will be home to original and library content from Lucasfilm (Star Wars), Marvel and Pixar.

Disney Plus has already been ramping up its original Marvel scripted series and plans to bring several familiar faces from the Marvel Cinematic Universe to the new platform with shows of their own.

Iger also recently confirmed that one such Marvel-based series will feature Tom Hiddleston as Loki.

Ironically, Luna will shortly be seen co-headlining one of the crown jewels in Netflix rosta, Narcos: Mexico alongside Michael Pena.
