Story by Jack Foley

DOCTOR Who is returning for an eighth season, the BBC has confirmed.

The broadcaster announced the news on Saturday via its official blog after the current run of episodes wrapped up ahead of the 50th anniversary special that is scheduled to air on November 23.

The announcement also revealed that Brian Minchin will join Steven Moffat as executive producer of the new series, while Moffat himself is “already plotting a brand new run of adventures for the Doctor”.

Matt Smith will also reprise his role as The Doctor, which he has played since 2010.

The keenly anticipated 50th anniversary special will feature Smith as well as his current assistant, Jenna-Louise Coleman and former Doctor David Tennant.

Billie Piper and John Hurt, who was seen in the season seven finale, will also feature.
