Story by Jack Foley

A REBOOT of Doogie Howser MD is in the works at Disney+.

The new project has a working title of Doogie Kealoha, M.D. and comes from Kourtney Kang, whose past credits include How I Met Your Mother and Fresh Off The Boat.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Disney+ project’s lead character will be a half-Asian, half-white 16-year-old girl with a genius-level intellect who has breezed through college and medical school and is now working as a doctor in Hawaii.

The character’s background reflects that of Kang.

The original Doogie Hoswer, M.D. was created by Steven Bochco and David E. Kelley and ran from 1989 to 1993 on ABC. Neil Patrick Harris – who reunited with Kang on How I Met Your Mother played the title character.

Bochco’s widow, Dayna, and son Jesse are executive producers of the reboot along with Kang, Jake Kasdan and Melvin Mar.

Doogie Kealoha is one of a number of Disney+ projects that reach back into the company’s vast back catalogue. The streaming service also has projects based on Turner & Hooch and The Mighty Ducks in the works, along with a Beauty & The Beast prequel series.
