Dwayne Johnson set for HBO athletes comedy pilot

GI Joe: Retaliation

Story by Jack Foley

DWAYNE Johnson is set to star in a new comedy-drama pilot being produced by Mark Wahlberg for HBO.

The untitled project would focus on the lives of retired athletes living in Miami and is being penned by Stephen Levinson (of Entourage fame). Wahlberg and Johnson would both serve as executive producers along with Dany Garcia and Battleship‘s Peter Berg, the latter of whom will direct the pilot.

Aside from being somewhat prolific with his film career, where he is now dubbed ‘franchise Viagra’, Johnson has recently also turned his attentions to TV. He’ll shortly be seen hosting TNT’s reality competition series The Hero, in which 10 people live in a house and participate in various missions that test their brains, brawn and even their morality.

In cinemas, meanwhile, he also has Fast & Furious 6, Pain & Gain and Hercules on the way. And he recently enjoyed a sizeable box office smash with GI Joe: Retaliation.

The HBO gig would reunite him with Pain & Gain co-star Wahlberg, who is also no stranger to successful TV work, having produced both Entourage and Boardwalk Empire.
