Story by Jack Foley

EDDIE Murphy is to play former Washington DC Mayor Marion Barry in a new project for HBO.

The move sees him heading for the small screen with director Spike Lee.

Barry served as mayor from 1979 to 1991 and again from 1995 to 1999 and is currently a member of the DC City Council representing the city’s eighth ward.

But in January 1990, he was caught smoking crack cocaine at the Vista International Hotel and was arrested on drug charges, ultimately serving six months in prison.

The TV movie would be based on a script from John Ridley based on consultations with journalists Harry Jaffe and Tom Sherwood and filmmakers Dana Flor and Toby Oppenheimer, the duo behind The Nine Lives of Marion Barry.

The former two have also written a book, entitled Dream City, which examines politics in DC, and which was first published in 1994.
