Elizabeth Pena cast as Sofia Vergara's mum in Modern Family

Elizabeth Pena

Story by Jack Foley

ELIZABETH Pena is to guest star on Modern Family as the mother of Sofia Vergara’s Gloria.

The actress, who is best known for roles in La Bamba and Rush Hour, will appear in the 12th episode of the season as Pilar alongside Gloria’s sister Sonia, who will be played by Stephanie Beatriz (The Closer).

Entertainment Weekly broke the casting news after speaking to the show’s executive producer, Christopher Lloyd, who commented: “There’s a bit of a competitive relationship between Gloria and her sister that will be fun.

“The mother is the formidable, domineering character in the family, and has a complicated relationship with Jay (Ed O’Neill). I’m not sure she’s ever completely accepted Jay, and they lock horns in the episode.”

The episode in question will be named Fulgencio and will be filmed on Monday, November 5 (so expect plenty of fireworks in it!).

Pena and Beatriz are the latest guest stars to be named for the show’s fourth season, along with Matthew Broderick, Jason Mantzoukas and Shelley Long.
