Game of Thrones final season to air in Spring 2019

THE final season of Game of Thrones will premiere in April 2019.

Although a specific premiere date hasn’t been set, the April announcement continues a trend of HBO narrowing the window for the show’s return, while simultaneously continuing to build anticipation for it.

In January, the channel announced Game of Thrones would definitely be back sometime in 2019, before programming chief Casey Bloys went one step further in July to confirm that the premiere would be in the first half of the year.

Now, we have a month… and only 30 possible days to choose from (although it’s a fairly safe bet to assume that it’ll be a Sunday in the US and, most probably, a Monday in the UK).

By booking it in April, HBO will also be ensuring that the final series of Game of Thrones will be eligible for the 2019 Emmys.

Season seven took home nine awards, including the top honour for outstanding drama series.

Season eight will run for six episodes, one fewer than season seven. But what the final run lacks in number, it may make up in running time: individual episodes could run as long as 90 minutes.

It will also feature a directing team of veteran Thrones helmers David Nutter (the ‘Red Wedding’ episode Rains of Castamere) and Miguel Sapochnik (of hard-hitting Hardhome fame), as well as creators David Benioff and Dan Weiss, who are directing the finale.

Of the rumours concerning what to expect, it is widely anticipated that one episode will feature wall-to-wall action, containing the biggest battle sequence in the series history. Fans have also always been teased a “bittersweet” finale.

The announcement was made in the form of a new video broadcasting the launch of a final season campaign called #ForTheThrone.

The video, featuring all of the violent highlights from across the seven seasons (including the Red Wedding and the King’s Landing wildfire attack), makes a bold promise: “Every battle. Every betrayal. Every risk. Every fight. Every sacrifice. Every death. All for the Throne.” Watch it here
