HBO’S Game of Thrones has been renewed for a fifth and sixth season just as its fourth run gets underway with more record viewing figures.

The show posted the news via its Facebook page, writing: “Raise a glass of Dornish wine. Game of Thrones is renewed for seasons five and six. Send a raven and spread the word across the realm.”

Season four’s debut gave HBO its top ratings since The Sopranos finale in 2007, with an average of 6.6 million viewers watching.

Game of Thrones also secured its biggest ever rating in the UK, with 1.2 million tuning into Sky Atlantic across two broadcasts.

As the show continues to gain momentum, author George R R Martin, who also serves as executive producer, has said that a feature film conclusion could be in the pipeline to round off the adapations of his A Song of Ice and Fire novels.
