GILLIAN Anderson has been cast as former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in the fourth season of The Crown.

The former X-Files luminary has been signed up to play the Iron Lady in the award-winning drama. But viewers will have to wait for more than a year to see her on screens as the third season of the drama has yet to air.

That third season will see Olivia Colman replace Claire Foy as Queen Elizabeth II, with Tobias Menzies replacing Matt Smith as Prince Philip.

Elsewhere, Ben Daniels will play Antony Armstrong-Jones, while Helena Bonham Carter will play Princess Margaret.

The season will also pick up in 1963 and cover events such as the rise of The Beatles and England winning the World Cup in 1966.

Characters such as Camilla Parker Bowles will also start to emerge in the fourth season, which will likely be set in the ’70s, when Thatcher served as Britain’s first female Prime Minister between 1979 and 1990.

Anderson is no stranger to Netflix, having recently starred in British dramedy Sex Education as a sex therapist.
