Glee considering Whitney Houston tribute for Valentine episode
Story by Jack Foley
THE producers of Glee are considering whether to add a tribute to the late singer Whitney Houston during the Valentine’s Day episode that is due to air on US TV on February 14.
A cover of Whitney Houston/Dolly Parton’s I Will Always Love You is already set to be included on the show, as performed by Amber Riley’s Mercedes while she struggles to decide between ex Sam (Chord Overstreet) and current boyfriend Shane (LaMarcus Tinker).
But a spokesman for 20th Television, the studio behind Glee, told The Hollywood Reporter that the Valentine’s Day-themed episode, titled Heart, may yet include further Houston tributes even though the episode in question was finished and delivered to the network ready for airing.
He said that one way of doing this might be a title card dedicating the episode to Houston or acknowledging her passing following the episode.
I Will Always Love You was one of Houston’s biggest hits following its use in her film, The Bodyguard. Although written by Dolly Parton in 1973 and released as a single the following year, Houston’s rendition spent 14 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, a record at the time, and took two Grammys for record of the year and best female pop vocal performance.
It also remained at the top of the UK chart for several weeks.
