HBO developing Mike Tyson boxing project with Spike Lee
Story by Jack Foley
HBO is developing a new series loosely based around the early career of heavyweight boxer Mike Tyson.
The project, titled Da Brick, is the brainchild of Tyson and filmmaker Spike Lee and has been put together with L.A. Riots’ John Ridley, Entourage creator Doug Ellin and his producing partner Jim Lefkowitz.
Lee is set to direct with Ridley on board to write.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, it will be set in Newark, N.J., which is often dubbed Brick City.
As Entourage was inspired by producer Mark Wahlberg’s life, so Da Brick will reflect aspects of Tyson’s upbringing.
Tyson, ironically, completed a cameo in Entourage and has also made a big screen name for himself in the Hangover franchise.
In addition to Da Brick, Ellin is lining up a new comedy vehicle with Ed Burns and HBO, which is poised to replace Entourage when it completes its run after eight successful seasons later this summer.
