HOMER Simpson has been named the greatest TV and film character of the past 20 years.
The survey, by Entertainment Weekly, placed Homer ahead of Harry Potter in the list, prompting his creator, Matt Groening, to admit that people relate to the character because “we’re all secretly propelled by desires we can’t admit to”.
Elsewhere in the list, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, played by Sarah Michelle Gellar, came third, Tony Soprano came fourth, while The Joker, as played by the late Australian actor Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight, came fifth.
Other famous characters to make the top 10 were Rachel from long-running sitcom Friends, Johnny Depp’s Edward Scissorhands and Anthony Hopkins’ Hannibal Lecter.
Sarah Jessica Parker’s Carrie Bradshaw from Sex And The City and cartoon character Spongebob Squarepants completed the top 10.
