IDRIS Elba is to star in and direct a new adaptation of The Hunchback of Notre Dame for Netflix.

The British star will also produce the project under his Green Door production company.

What’s more, he will also be producing original music for the film, which is being described as a “sonic and musical experience”.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame is a 19th Century Gothic romance that follows Quasimodo, a hunchback, who falls in love with the gypsy Esmeralda in Paris. It is perhaps best known for the 90s Disney animated version.

But it has been turned into a film on several occasions, with another notable incarnation starring Charles Laughton in 1939.

Michael Mitnick, who penned the scripts for The Current War and The Giver, will adapt the modern day re-telling of the Victor Hugo classic.

For Elba, the project marks another foray behind the camera. The actor recently made his directorial debut with the drama Yardie, which can shortly be seen at the Sundance London film festival.

He also created and stars in the Sky comedy Turn Up Charlie.
