Inspector Montalbano, Collection 9

Preview by Jack Foley

OUR favourite Sicilian detective Inspector Montalbano returns for his final enthralling series of intrigue, drama and fine food, set against a stunning sun-drenched backdrop.

The final episodes of the hugely popular, long-running drama will be served up on digital and DVD as Inspector Montalbano Collection 9 courtesy of Acorn Media International, following its run on BBC4. Inspector Montalbano Complete Collection 1 – 9 Box Set will also be released for your summer viewing pleasure.

Based on Andrea Camilleri’s bestselling books, the show is a TV ratings hit and stars Luca Zingaretti as the eponymous much-loved icon of contemporary detective drama. The series has all of the thrills of Scandi-noir, but with fine food, Sicilian culture and the warmth of the Mediterranean sun.

Salvo Montalbano is a sharp, unconventional detective who must fight to succeed within Italy’s precarious justice system, alongside his trusted colleagues. The final two feature length delights find him amidst a refugee crisis, tying up some murderous loose ends and tackling a triple blast from the past.

The Other End of the Line (L’altro capo del filo)

The Inspector and his team have been stationed at the port to assist with a wave of refugees arriving nightly on the Sicilian coast. When he and Livia accept an invite to a friend’s wedding he enlists the services of charming tailor Elena Biasini for a new suit.

But while he’s on duty one night, tragedy strikes as Elena is brutally murdered and Montalbano must weave together the loose threads and solve the crime, all the while managing the growing influx of migrants in his own inimitable way.

A Diary from ’43 (Un diario del ’43)

When a diary from 1943 is discovered amidst the demolition of an old silo, Montalbano is brought in to investigate the confession of a shocking crime by its 15-year-old scribe, Carlo Colussi.

On the same day the detective is approached by John Zuck, a 90-year-old veteran from Vigato who was taken prisoner by the Americans and stayed on in the US. Returning to Sicily he finds his name inscribed on a tribute to the war’s dead and asks the inspector for his help to get his name removed.

The following day another 90-year-old Angelino Todara, one of the city’s richest businessmen is found murdered. Is there a link to these three men from the past? Montalbano is on the case.
