Jean-Marc Vallee to direct Gorilla and the Bird limited series for HBO

Story by Jack Foley

JEAN-Marc Vallee, the filmmaker behind HBO hits Big Little Lies and Sharp Objects, has signed up for a third limited series.

The Emmy and Directors’ Guild Award winner and Oscar nominee will direct and executive produce Gorilla & The Bird.

Based on a memoir by Zack McDermott, the story will follow Zack, a public defender with the Legal Aid Society of New York, who suffers a sudden psychotic break that takes him on a harrowing journey of delusions and anti-social behaviour, resulting in his arrest and commitment to Bellevue.

As he fights to regain his sanity, Zack (the Gorilla) turns to the only person who didn’t give up on him – his mother, (the Bird).

As yet, there is no word on casting – although those announcements are expected to follow fairly soon.

Vallee had been on a self-imposed break from directing, having come off the back of Sharp Objects in need of recharging his batteries and getting back his life.

In addition to helming the HBO series, Vallee is also known for his movie hits Dallas Buyers Club and The Young Victoria.
