JEREMY Irons is to head the cast of Damon Lindelof’s Watchmen pilot for HBO.

Lindelof’s take on Alan Moore’s comic series will be set in an alternate history where ‘superheroes’ are treated as outlaws.

According to Lindelof, the series will embrace the nostalgia of the original graphic novel while attempting to break new ground of its own.

Lindelof penned the script and will executive produces alongside Tom Spezialy and Nicole Kassell (The Leftovers), the latter of whom will direct the pilot.

Irons joins the previously announced ensemble cast members Regina King, Don Johnson, Tim Blake Nelson, Louis Gossett Jr., Adelaide Clemens and Andrew Howard.
