JOHN Boyega and James McAvoy will lend their voices to a new animated version of classic children’s tale Watership Down for Netflix and the BBC.

The four-hour mini-series will adapt Richard Adams’ classic novel about a band of rabbits who are forced to take flight from the intrusion of man and the certain destruction of their home.

Led by a stout-hearted pair of brothers, the rabbits journey from their native Sandleford Warren through the harrowing trials posed by predators and adversaries, towards the promise of a safer new environment.

X-Men star McAvoy will voice Hazel, while Star Wars actor Boyega will voice Bigwig.

The star-studded vocal cast further includes Sir Ben Kingsley as General Woundwort, Nicholas Hoult as Fiver and Gemma Arterton as Clover.

They will further be joined by Miles Jupp as Blackberry, Freddie Fox as Captain Holly, Olivia Colman as Strawberry and Anne-Marie Duff as Hyzenthlay.

The new adaptation was written by Tom Bidwell and directed by Noam Murro and is a co-production between BBC One and Netflix.

Commenting on the production, Netflix’s VP of global television Larry Tanz said in a statement: “We jumped at the chance to get in early and work alongside the BBC and 42 to bring this classic English tale to our members around the world.

“This novel presentation of Adam’s work pairs great talent with beautiful animation and will delight existing fans and capture a whole new audience for this timeless story.”
