JOHN Krasinski is to play Jack Ryan in a new TV series from streaming service Amazon.

Tom Clancy’s popular character, most recently portrayed on the big screen by Chris Pine in box office under-achieve Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, will be given a 10-episode run.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the drama will follow Ryan as he uncovers a pattern in terrorist communication that thrusts him into the centre of a dangerous gambit with a new breed of terrorism that threatens destruction on a global scale.

The script has been penned by Carlton Cuse (Bates Motel, The Strain) and Graham Roland (Almost Human).

Commenting on the series, Amazon Studios head Roy Price said: “We’re excited to add the Jack Ryan global franchise to our robust originals pipeline. Our customers will enjoy a compelling adaptation of the action-packed spy thriller book series, further raising the bar for the quality level of storytelling that has made Prime Video a leading destination for content.”

There have been five Jack Ryan films to date, with the character played by Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford, Ben Affleck and Chris Pine.

It was Ford, however, who enjoyed the biggest success in the role with the films Patriot Games and Clear & Present Danger.

Krasinski, who shot to prominence in the US version of The Office, recently displayed his action credentials in Michael Bay thriller 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi (pictured).
