EMMY and Tony winning actor John Lithgow is joining the cast of Dexter, it has been confirmed.

The Hollywood Reporter states that the former Cliffhanger villain will feature in all 12 episodes of the show’s upcoming fourth season, during which he will play a character called Walter Simmons, Miami’s latest serial killer and Dexter Morgan’s (Michael C. Hall) new nemesis.

According to the report, Simmons is “an unassuming, mild-mannered suburbanite who has been living a dual life as one of America’s most prolific serial killers”.

Lithgow’s character will be dubbed the “Trinity Killer” because of his preference for killing in threes.

He will be tracked to Miami by FBI special agent Frank Lundy (Keith Carradine, reprising his role from seaosn 2), where Dexter assists with the investigation and becomes fascinated with the killer’s skills.

The fourth season of Dexter is due to premiere in the US on September 27. Season 3 of the acclaimed Showtime drama is currently being aired on the F/X Channel in the UK.
