IRON Man director (and star) Jon Favreau is to write and executive produce a new live-action Star Wars TV series, Disney has confirmed.

The show, which would be on Disney’s new direct-to-consumer platform, does not yet have a release date.

But Favreau is no stranger to the Star Wars universe, having played roles in both the Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated series and in the upcoming Solo: A Star Wars Story.

He does, however, sound giddy with excitement, saying in a statement: “If you told me at 11-years-old that I would be getting to tell stories in the Star Wars universe, I wouldn’t have believed you. I can’t wait to embark upon this exciting adventure.”

Kathleen Kennedy, Lucasfilm president, commented: “I couldn’t be more excited about Jon coming on board to produce and write for the new direct-to-consumer platform. Jon brings the perfect mix of producing and writing talent, combined with a fluency in the Star Wars universe.

“This series will allow Jon the chance to work with a diverse group of writers and directors and give Lucasfilm the opportunity to build a robust talent base.”

The appointment of Favreau to the new Star Wars series is the next step in what Disney CEO Bob Iger told investors last month was Disney working on multiple Star Wars series for its streaming service, which will target families.

The streaming service, which has yet to be named, is currently aiming for a late 2019 debut.

In anticipation of the launch, Disney has already pulled its Marvel movies from rival Netflix.

Favreau, who has also directed Disney’s live-action remake of The Jungle Book, is currently working on his Lion King remake, which is due out on July 19, 2019.
