BRITISH actor Joseph Mawle has joined the cast of Amazon’s ambitious Lord of the Rings series.

The former Game of Thrones ensemble player is believed to have been cast as a villain named Oren in the straight-to-series effort – although Amazon has yet to comment.

He joins a cast that also includes fellow Brit Will Poulter and Australian actress Markella Kavenagh.

Based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s iconic fantasy novels, the series is set in Middle-Earth’s Second Age, before the events of the author’s primary trilogy, The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and The Return of the King.

J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay (Star Trek 4) serve as showrunners, while JA Bayona (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom) is set to direct the first two episodes and will executive produce along with his producing partner Belén Atienza.

Production is slated to begin in 2020.

In addition to playing Benjen Stark in Game of Thrones, Mawle’s other credits include Ripper Street, MotherFatherSon, The Tunnel and Birdsong.
