Kate Winslet headed for HBO's Mildred Pierce
Story by Jack Foley
KATE Winslet is to star in a five hour Great Depression era mini-series for HBO.
The Oscar-winning actress will star in Mildred Pierce, playing a proud, single mother struggling to earn her daughter’s love during the Depression in middle-class LA.
Based on the novel by James M. Cain, the latest adaptation has been co-penned by Todd Haynes, who will direct, and Jon Raymond. Shooting is due to begin in April in New York.
A 1945 film version of Mildred Pierce earned Joan Crawford an Oscar for the lead role, as well as a further five nominations, including a pair of supporting actress nods for Eve Arden and Ann Blyth.
No other casting has yet been announced but Winselt’s involvement ends months of speculation. She was last seen in the Oscar-winning The Reader – which marked her first win after being nominated five times.
HBO remains one of the few channels committed to the mini-series business and is also set to launch 10-episode World War II epic The Pacific in March.
