KATIE Holmes is to play former US first lady Jackie Kennedy in a TV mini-series.

The show – which also stars Greg Kinnear as JFK and British actor Tom Wilkinson as Kennedy’s father Joe – marks the first scripted series on The History Channel.

It will follow the events surrounding the life and subsequent assassination of President Kennedy as well as those surrounding his family. This will include the early years of Kennedy’s presidency until 1963, when he was assassinated in Dallas.

The series is due to be aired on the US cable channel next year and should follow on UK channels sometime after that.

Jackie Kennedy was considered one of the world’s most stylish women during her lifetime and, following her relationship with JFK, later married Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis. She died of cancer in 1994.

Holmes, who has been married to Tom Cruise since 2006, last appeared on-screen in the 2005 blockbuster Batman Begins.

Kinnear’s numerous roles include in the 2006 hit film Little Miss Sunshine and alongside Jack Nicholson in As Good As It Gets, for which he received a best supporting actor nomination at the Academy Awards.
