Laurel & Hardy to be subject of new BBC drama
Story by Jack Foley
COMEDY icons Laurel & Hardy are to be the subject of a new BBC drama.
The biopic will be written by Jeff Pope, best known for TV dramas Mrs Biggs and Appropriate Adult, and who is currently riding high in UK cinemas with Philomena, the script for which he co-wrote with Steve Coogan.
Stan and Ollie will chronicle the pair’s 1953 tour of Britain, when their careers were on the wane and beset with problems.
As yet, there are no casting details and a filming schedule and date for the film’s transmission have yet to be set.
Shane Allen, the BBC’s controller of comedy commissioning, described the film as a “love letter to two pioneers and enduring giants of screen comedy”.
He also said tha the 90-minute one-off would “beautifully” capture the comedians’ “deep emotional bond… with great insight and heart”.
The film will be produced by BBC Comedy in partnership with The Weinstein Company, which distributed Philomena in the US.
