FORMER Bond villain Mads Mikkelsen is to play iconic serial killer Hannibal Lecter in NBC’s new series.

Based on characters first created in Thomas Harris’ novels, Hannibal will also feature British actor Hugh Dancy (The Big C) as Will Graham, the criminal profiler who is on the hunt for a serial killer with the FBI and who enlists Dr. Lecter’s help with the case.

Mikkelsen, the Copenhagen-born actor best known as Bond villain Le Chiffre in Casino Royale, has also made a big impression in films such as The Three Musketeers and Clash of the Titans.

He also won widespread critical acclaim and took the best actor award at the Cannes Film Festival last month for Thomas Vinterberg’s The Hunt. And he will next be seen in Thor 2.

Hannibal is a 13-episode series from Bryan Fuller, the creator of Pushing Daisies. He will write and executive produce alongside Martha De Laurentiis (Red Dragon and the big-screen feature Hannibal), Sara Colleton (Showtime’s Dexter), Jesse Alexander (Lost) and Katie O’Connell.
