MARIA Bello is to step into the shoes of Helen Mirren for a US TV version of Prime Suspect.

Written by Alexandra Cunningham, the American version of the show will see Bello playing a detective in a tough New York precinct dominated by men.

Peter Berg has been lined up to direct the pilot episode.

Under Mirren’s guidance, the UK version of the show ran for seven seasons and was a massive critical success, winning a number of awards, including multiple Emmys.

Bello, though, is no stranger to playing tough, no-nonsense female characters, having done so in films including A History of Violence, The Cooler and the forthcoming The Company Men.

On the small screen, she also recently did a two-episode stint on Law & Order: SVU – although she hasn’t been a series TV regular since 1998, when she did one season of long-running medical drama ER.
