SONS of Anarchy spin-off Mayans MC has been renewed for a third season by FX.

The Disney-owned cable network made the announcement a day before the series airs its second-season finale, and just weeks after firing series co-creator Kurt Sutter.

Co-creator Elgin James will take over as showrunner for season three, which is slated for fall 2020.

Announcing the decision, Nick Grad, president of original programming at FX, said in a statement: “We’re happy to continue telling the story of Mayans MC with our partners at Fox 21 and excited that Elgin James has earned the opportunity to become the series’ showrunner.

“Kurt Sutter identified and chose Elgin as his partner on the show from the outset, and Elgin has been instrumental to the success of the series, leveraging his experience and creative vision to make Mayans MC with this incredible cast, crew and creative team.”

Bert Salke, Fox 21 TV Studios president, added: “Keeping this vibrant series strong is a huge priority to everyone at Fox 21 Television Studios, FX Productions and of course FX, which has been a spectacular home and platform for both Mayans MC and Sons before it.”

The first season of Mayans MC screened on BBC2 in the UK.
