MEDICAL drama Monroe has reportedly been axed by ITV.

The series, which first aired in March 2011, starred James Nesbitt as Dr Gabriel Monroe, a maverick neurosurgeon, as well as Sarah Parish and Tom Riley.

It was created by Blackpool and Occupation writer Peter Bowker.

The show premiered with 6.85 million viewers on ITV1 during its first run but ended its recent second series with an overnight audience of 3.53m, prompting the decision to not bring it back for a third run.

An ITV spokeswoman said: “We can confirm that Monroe will not be returning. It has been a fantastic series, which we have been proud to have on the channel, but continuing to refresh our slate is an important part of the creative process for ITV Drama.”
